Feast your eyes on my new & improved otter for #! I’ve painted so many otters but could only find this one picture for comparison, from a little over a year ago: https://mastodon.art/@KarinWanderer/109445033759759404

I've finally finished this painting that absolutely intimidated me because I spent so much time on the drawing part, I was afraid I'd ruin it

There are some new products which I think are really interesting from Schmincke. I've made some videos about it for those who are interested.

Heading up Mount Jo

From an extended NY State holiday last year. Saw many, many chipmunks. They are everywhere. All the time.

I’ve decided to pursue the elusive ‘loose style’ and am following the advice of the mighty Paul Talbot-Greaves, to hold the brush at the end. I know it’s not complete, but I’m not inclined to do any more. I’d be interested in candid and hopefully constructive comments.

The other day I batched a dozen beginnings for gouache crab drawings, now I am remembering how much longer it takes to finish one of them than to start it lolsob

A rough watercolour painting in grey blue of a figure in a wide brimmed samurai style hat. A pair of orange glasses are looking out from beneath the hat's brim

Ionization. A watercolor painting for # Day 5. This is inspired by a haunting thread from several days ago (https://zeroes.ca/@subjacentish/111444423550650844) applying lessons from Hannah Arendt to the pandemic, the context of her discussion being the extreme atomization of European societies following World War I.

A watercolor painting showing about 33 stylized figures on a light wash backdrop grading from green at top to gray at the bottom of the painting. At the top of the painting are three sets of green figures with joined hands. Right below these sets are two figures in gray who have started falling through space. Below them are 22 figures falling in random orientations painted red and blue.

A totally and most definitely unstaged photo of my travel painting workspace for posting on a social media platform that is totally and most definitively not Instagram.

A top down photo of a blonde wood table that has a number of objects arranged on it, including a sketchbook labeled “Munich” with two watercolor sketches, a watercolor palette, tape, brushes, water cup, coffee cup and more.

Seriality. # Day 3. I'm continuing with the theme of representing systems as pipes with the bottommost set having devolved into a tangled complex mess.

# #
A watercolor painting in vertical aspect showing a series of four sets of pipes running horizontally with several valves on them and an outlet always on the right. The sets of pipes are in increasing complexity from top to bottom with the bottommost set being a tangled drippy mess in greens and purples.

Yesterday, I was able to go to the artist meetup at the Field Museum. It is so reenergizing to connect with fellow artists and focus on some new art!

I chose this specimen because of its challenges: the pose, the foreshortening, and the fact that almost all the pigment had faded from it. It is common for pigments to fade over time, which is why I like to use photo reference of a living animal when I paint museum specimens.

# # #
A photo of a taxidermized bird on display in a museum diorama. The lighting is a little low and the colors of the bird are faded, leaving it look mostly dark brown.
Watercolor and gouache painting of a colorful bird. The head and neck is green with a red-tipped fan on its head, the body and tail are blue, and the primary and secondary feathers of the wings are deep red. The bird is posed with wings open and it appears to be flying away from the viewer.

Corner of Cliff Street and Rte 100. Direct Watercolor. 20"x16", 140lb Arches Rough.

Starting to actually like the daunting-ness of going direct with a large format. Sometimes what comes out doesn't seem totally like my "style" - such as this - but I made it so it's in there somewhere. Fun to explore.

Watercolor painting of a large grouping of apartments where Cliff Street and Route 100 meet in Stowe, Vermont. The large white clapboard buildings are dappled in purple shadows of Autumn from the surrounding trees and telephone poles, though only a single telephone pole is seen in the foreground before the buildings. The telephone pole is to the right and has two orange traffic signs on its lower half; the upper sigh shows the motif of a fire engine, while the lower sign has indescript lettering. In the middle, lower half of the scene are parking spots and a car seen from the back. The apartment buildings have various windows in, with the building in the back having the most uniform collection.

Fall colors are all but gone here so I’ll cap the season off with my peak-spectacle watercolor overlooking the Blackstone River. Had our third hard frost this morning.

Using that set permanently since January. I've bought it years ago to try Daniel Smith watercolors and didn't use it much. That are 1/8 pans, so they're really small. They contain around 0,3ml but were only around 70% full when I bought them. So it's really a minimum of paint. Yesterday I got the very first pan empty, after nearly 11 months of constant usage. That shows so easily how incredible productive artist grade watercolors are.

Photo of a set of 36 1/8 pans with Daniel Smith watercolors. One is completely empty, from some you can see the bottom of the pan, the rest are still very full

Hello! I'm a transplant from artisan.chat so I figure an # is in order.

I'm an # and work mainly with #. My favorite subjects are animals of all kinds and I paint a lot of # and # colored animals. I also bounce around between # (thank you #) like #, #, # (with an emphasis on #), and whatever new thing that I just have to try.

I'm looking forward to meeting other creatives! I'd love to hear from you!
A watercolor painting of a tiger sits on a desk. There are paintbrushes and paint pallets on the edges. The tiger's stripes are painted with a rainbow gradient and the background is reminiscent of outer space.

Yellow Gourds
Further practice planning layered watercolours. I’ve never before had the nerve to do a compete first wash wet in wet over the entire surface.

It’s a bit sloppy (done in a cafe nattering to buddies), but I’m moderately happy with the gourds, and sufficiently unhappy with the foliage that I’m sending myself back to remedial foliage practice.

Painting of a pair of yellow gourds, hanging from an overhead vine. There is dark foliage in the background.

Been weird not posting every night...
Anyway, here's a little John Harris inspired watercolour. Also feeling a bit Pink Floyd as well

A watercolour painting of a surreal landscape. A walkway stretches out, high above the clouds, passing between high towers. Stars glitter in the distance

Abstract watercolor and ink - 11/6/2023

To shake myself out of a rut, I’m using both bigger paper and brushes, as well as a few other ideas.

An abstract watercolor painting featuring four color fields in loosely defined horizontal rows, vaguely reminiscent of a landscape.from top to bottom the color fields are a reddish pink, forest green, yellow ochre, dark Prussian blue. The entire painting has a series of bright white splatters that criss cross over the entire painting.

A walrus painted on watercolor. BTW, I've noticed that engagement on the fediverse is way down than it was 2-3 months ago. I do hope people return. Personally, I use almost nothing but the fediverse services now: PixelFed, Mastodon, Lemmy. The chronological feed, and finding new users to follow via hashtags, is the only thing that makes sense to me. These recommendation engines on the big social media is a total # of usability. You can never be found there, if the algorithm doesn't like you for any reason.

It turns out that I wasn't quite finished with my Happy Goat.

Using the wet-on-wet watercolour base, I added more depth, then gouache paints for more definition on the body. Plus details with a white Gelly Roll pen.

#

I was pleased to find out that my old gouache paints still work, though they're thicker than I remember.
