Finishing the Stories Carousel is the last major task before shipping Stories to our mobile app (TestFlight first).

We’re caching the carousel today and invalidating on Story view/create, but that’s a poor UX. I’m building a Redis-backed fanout + view state service that will generate carousels on-demand, cutting latency and scaling cleanly.

The Story Composer took a lot of work, I’m really proud of it, even though it still needs a bit more polishing.

There are only paid libraries to do this kind of stuff in react-native, so I had to learn rn-gesture-handler to build it and make it work properly and performantly.

On the bright side, we can extend this with new features and keep the whole experience simple and familiar.

I’ve put a lot of effort into a solid MVP with photo stories that support text, mention and link overlays that are interactive on the client.

We will be shipping this to our iOS TestFlight first, and will focus on bug fixes before promoting it to the production track on Android and iOS app stores.

We've federated Stories in @pixelfed for several years using bearcaps that expire after 15 minutes.

Meaning that only Pixelfed servers are able to handle and fetch the activity, and we also rotate the media urls after 30 mins.

We federate Stories using an object (with a Story type) like:
