Early in my community’s #
lockdown a few months ago, I chose #
Bach’s #
Toccata in C minor to include in my fledgling #
sheltering at #
home #
recordings series. I was just beginning to experiment with recording #
solo #
classical #
piano with a digital piano, and the results varied widely. This toccata was one of several initial attempts I eventually removed due to poor performance, poor processing, or both, after my efforts began to improve over time.
I returned to it after being inspired by Angela #
Hewitt’s recent live streamed #
recital from #
Wigmore Hall, where she opened with it. I tried to emulate her mastery, but all I could produce was ineffective mimicry: it is much more difficult to pull off Hewitt’s
slower #
fugue interpretively (even though a faster tempo is technically harder). Ultimately I returned to a flashier, brasher, fugue tempo, a #
gimmick to gloss over a shallow depth, but closer to my character as a musician.
