Two small mushrooms from a second fungi hunting trip to #. The focus-stacking by hand worked particularly well on this one - it needed a bit of practice.

we went looking for macro subjects last night.

My wife spotted the tiniest mushrooms! about 1 mm high.

for photos this close, the depth of field is very very small. The mushroom shot is a composition of 15 shots. all stacked on top of each other.

after I collected my shots a tiny red bug was climbing on the tiny mushroom. So I quickly tried to get a focused shot of that bug. but it was crawling around so it took a few attempts to get the shot.

a super closeup photo of a very tiny white mushroom, <br />with an even tinier red bug climbing on top. The mushroom is 1mm high, so the bug must only be about a tenth that size.

No idea what's this. Maybe apple rose?

edit: it's unanimous, we're convinced it's a yew tree. Thanks, everyone 😀

Is it an alien landscape on a planet far, far away? Nope— it’s a tiny, scenic, dendritic Welo opal from Ethiopia! 🤩 I haven’t done any shaping on this one— oftentimes these scenic opals are perfect just as they are. 💜✨ Happy Friday, y’all!

Hidden gem (the entrance is in a rural subdivision and very badly indicated). One hectare downhill with lots of wood carvings. We were alone.

Don't hesitate to share and please look at the three other parts of the thread. (14 pictures)

We had a pretty bad # here in Montreal recently - a huge chunk of the city lost power. I promise you, this is not a weird little rubber desert island toy for smurfs, complete with coconut trees.

It's a liverwort which I just found growing between some paving stones behind our house. It must be...2cm (3/4") high?

Here is another goodie for the holidays or just because. Cranberries have so many health benefits. I make my own cranberry sauce and save some to make a cranberry holiday cocktail. It can be used as a nonalcoholic drink or served warm with your favored spirit. It takes the chill right out of your bones. # # @Curator to # # # # # # # # #

So fascinated with my new homemade macro focusing rail that it is consuming my days.

Identifying lichen species is difficult. This photo contains at least three different species, perhaps from some of these genera Xanthoria, Physcia or Parmotrema, Hypogymnia, ... I could be completely wrong.

All are growing on a dead branch of the invasive and infinitely obnoxious English Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

# # #
A dramatically lit thin horizontal branch of hawthorn with one prominent thorn standing just short of vertical. The tip of the thorn is free, but he body is cloaked with several lichen species. A bright orange specimen displays bugle shaped fruiting bodies pointing outward in all directions. The base of the thorn is embraced with whitish branching arms of another lichen that sport black threadlike tentacles that reach into the air around it. Along the branch there are more patches of orange lichen that hug the desiccated and peeling bark. A few whitish-green branches of yet another lichen reach in from out of frame on the right side of the photo.

This hornet attacked me while I was making dinner last night. It tried to drive me away from my meal. A spatula ended the attack.

Now it's a specimen for my camera.

Warning, very close image of a hornet's wicked face.

# #
It's a very close up image of an aggressive hornet in bright yellow and black. Surprisingly hairy, there is fuzz all over it. The compound eyes reflect the room light. Three glossy black balls appear embedded in the top of its head, I can assume they are either windows to its soul, or some sort of eye-like light sensors.

My old TAZ 4 3D printer made all the parts to convert itself back and forth between a 3D printer and a macro photo studio. The print bed moves the camera for focus stacking. The subject is an immature rose bud of the 1795 Gallica rose, La Belle Sultane. The purpose of the sticky resin glands on stalks carpeting the surface of the rosebud is unknown, but it probably has something to do with protection from insects.

Today I feel like a #...so here's a snail for you!
This one was sitting on some round mushrooms. It was very small, probably 2 cm, so I didn't see it at first. But I'm glad that I did, because it is a cute picture I think.

Color selective reflection from a damselfly wing.
I found a pair of shed wings last summer, along a river where I was camping for a while. Have no idea how they got there (molting? A picky fish spit them out?). We don't know how or why the iridescent colors are generated (but a combination of wax nanocrystal that grow on the epidermis and layering of high-low melamine epithelial cells are big factors)
# # # # # # # #
Light reflecting at an angle from the wing of a damselfly
Color and distribution of reflected light are really angle dependent so by moving the source of just a few degrees you could get very different results
I really love these blue veins, I dont know whether it's an optical artefact but the point-like sources of multicoloured light look like tightly packed cells on the wing's surface
The wing was quite old at this point (4+ months) and some parts of it were damaged by transport and handling

Some cocoon, or pupa maybe?
