Yessss they work! So there are a few features that I spent a lot of time thinking about and finally I got it working. Summary in my reply below.

Overall I really love how these are coming together but now that I've actually finished a pair I'm definitely still concerned about how long they take to make. And I also need to explore how the first link in the chain will work.
