A couple of what I call "one frame movies", shot back in 2016. As well as shooting a lot of 65x24 aspect ratio, 2.39:1 Cinemascope (which isn't far off 65x24) is another fave.

Both of these were made with my Hasselblad H4D-40. The taxi shot is with the 300mm lens.

Two taxis cross the junction between Yurakucho and Ginza, in Tokyo, at the foot of the Tokyu Plaza building From the roof of which, I shot this.

One taxi is yellow. The other green with yellow and white stripes. They're passing over a zebra crossing. Late afternoon sunlight strakes across the scene.
A gritty scene in Tokyo's Akihabara district. We are looking south, towards the railway viaduct that crosses the end of the street. Neon and other signage festoons every building. Electricity cables criss-cross the street in all directions.

Typographics ti: is the quarterly magazine of the Japan Typography Association. First published in 1980, the publication is still going on today.
Found a set of 10 magazines for 40 euros. I was curious but didn't find any PDF or sample online, so I've decided to give it a try. The content is really different from one another but what a discovery ! If I find a scanner solution, I will try to make them available for everybody.

目でみることばの世界
(The world of words seen with your eyes) is more a method for creating pictograms than an encyclopedia. Printed in 1983, the cover is a little bit old but the book inside is in a really good condition. 10 euros. The editor is the Japanese Standards Association. I wanted it because it was co-authored by Yukio Ota 太田幸夫.

What's inside 記号の事典 ?
290 pages of symbol systems and how to represent things. High quality colored print, with international standards but also Japanese symbolics like kimono belts, buddhas design, kamons, kabuki masks...

Dance moves on the left page.
Weaving patterns on the right page.
Sign language pictograms.
Pictograms depicting how to use a flag.

記号の事典 ( symbols encyclopedia) from 1985. One of the most expensive book, found it on yahoo auction for around 15 euros. The cardboard cover is a little bit damaged around the corner but the book inside is in MINT condition, it still smells fresh from the press. We have almost the same age and I'm not as fresh as this book. I will take care of it Japan, I promise.

A new episode of my podcast dropped. Adam tells me about the Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, a lengthy hard-scifi series about terraforming Mars.

Four shots from Kōenji (高円寺) in western Tokyo. A very interesting area to walk around and discover novel shops and unique eateries.

All photos shot with Mamiya 6 and 50mm f/4 lens on Kodak Portra 400 medium-format film.

What would you do if you suspected a pretty girl was actually a kappa? Feed her? Befriend her? Trick her?

I'll bet you wouldn't do what these farmers did...

Sketching the impressive # statue in the entrance lobby of # in Tokyo. We love the futuristic side of Japan: skyscrapers and robots everywhere! And it’s cool to use a technique as old as watercolor to draw these ultramodern landscapes.

Issie - イッシー - [UMA/Cryptid] - The Lake monster of Lake Ikeda, Ibusuki City! In Sept of 1978, 20 people saw a black object with two lumps swimming by, moving at breakneck speeds. Theories range from giant eels to swimming horses, dinosaurs & dragons!

Also not to be confused with kussie of Hokkaido ( though they’re both named After Nessie!)

Sunset in Kisarazu, Chiba

Was out at one of my fave sunset spots yesterday, It's across the other side of Tokyo Bay, in Chiba Prefecture. Takes 40mins from our place in Ōmori, Tokyo.

Was with a couple of friends who haven't been able to come to Japan since pre-pandemic. They'd never been out here. It was a perfect end to the week, all round.

Gear used?

Nikon D800E
Nikkor 300mm f/4
Hasselblad 503CW with CFV-50c digital back and the Zeiss 80mm and 250mm lenses.

How the tentacles of the US military are strangling the planet

The # has more than 50,000 # in # as well as a very large contingent of # and #. Seventy percent of the # # in Japan are on # island. Almost everyone in Okinawa wants the US # to go. Rape by # # – including of young children – has long angered the #. Terrible # # – including the harsh noise from US military # – rankles people. It was not difficult for Tamaki to run on an anti-US-base platform. It is the most basic demand of his constituents.

But the # # does not accept the # views of the # people. # against the Okinawans plays a role here, but more fundamentally there is a lack of regard for the wishes of ordinary people when it comes to a US military base.
...
For decades now, Okinawans have complained about the creation of enclaves of their # that operate as places for the recreation of American soldiers. Photographer Mao Ishikawa has portrayed these places, the segregated bars where only US soldiers are allowed to go and meet Okinawan women (her book Red Flower: The Women of Okinawa collects many of these pictures from the 1970s).

There have been at least 120 reported rapes since 1972, the “tip of the iceberg,” says Takazato. Every year there is at least one incident that captures the imagination of the people – a terrible act of #, a rape or a murder.

What the people want is for the # to close, since they see the bases as the reason for these acts of violence. It is not enough to call for # after the incidents; it is necessary, they say, to remove the cause of the incidents.
...
The US military has a staggering 883 military bases in 183 countries. In contrast, Russia has 10 such bases – eight of them in the former USSR. China has one overseas military base. There is no country with a military footprint that replicates that of the United States. The bases in Japan are only a small part of the massive infrastructure that allows the US military to be hours away from armed action against any part of the planet.
