Coding is like taking a lump of clay and slowly working it into the thing you want it to become. It is this process, and your intimacy with the medium and the materials you’re shaping, that teaches you about what you’re making – its qualities, tolerances, and limits – even as you make it. You know the least about what you’re making the moment before you actually start making it. That’s when you think you know what you want to make. The process, which is an iterative one, is what leads you towards understanidng what you actually want to make, whether you were aware of it or not at the beginning. Design is not merely about solving problems; it’s about discovering what the right problem to solve is and then solving it. Too often we fail not because we didn’t solve a problem well but because we solved the wrong problem.

When you skip the process of creation you trade the thing you could have learned to make for the simulacrum of the thing you thought you wanted to make. Being handed a baked and glazed artefact that approximates what you thought you wanted to make removes the very human element of discovery and learning that’s at the heart of any authentic practice of creation. Where you know everything about the thing you shaped into being from when it was just a lump of clay, you know nothing about the image of the thing you received for your penny from the vending machine.

Official Deadpool movie poster art designed and illustrated by Diana Greenhalgh (with colours by Blond). Created for Twentieth Century Fox for the first Deadpool movie, it features a comic book style illustration of Deadpool sniffing the smoke from his gun barrels. In the background is a crashed black SUV on its side, with bullet holes, broken glass, and a body hanging over the doorframe. The far background is an easter egg: an out-of-focus shot of the highway overpass from the original leaked footage that helped get the movie greenlit.
Screenshots from Season 1 Episode 3 of DC's Legends Of Tomorrow. The scene is of the villain Vandal Savage writing on a piece of papyrus scroll with a reed stylus, in hieroglyphs. The scroll prop was created by Diana Greenhalgh for the show. It even translates!
A quartet of full colour sketch cards featuring Marvel characters, arranged 2 by 2. Top left is X-Men's Magik coming up out of a hell portal with sword in hand and fist clenched. Top right is X-Men's Blink getting ready to throw daggers. Bottom left is Dagger coming out of Cloak's shadowy depths, throwing light daggers. Bottom right is Captain Marvel floating in space with stars behind her.
A sketch cover commission from a past convention that I particularly liked. It's of Marvel's Spider-Gwen on a sketch cover blank of the same title. Done in ink and Copic markers, the character is crouching on a background made of spiderwebs. The hooded and masked costume is white and black, with pink and teal webbed accents.

A little update on the baby elephant I'm modeling using the free SDF Prototyper Blender add-on…

Added a few non-SDF elements: the tusks and ears, because the current version of SDF Prototyper doesn't really allow creation of such shapes yet.

Next steps: mesh the SDF object, join with the non-SDF objects, then remesh in Sculpt Mode, and add some minor refinements.

Making a first model using the free SDF Prototyper (V2) add-on for Blender.

The add-on uses Geometry Nodes, and since the UI is a bit quirky, I find it easier to change parameters and connect nodes directly in Geo Nodes.

More updates will follow in this thread.

Wild idea I had this night including :pixelfed: @pixelfed:

What about using the wonderful work of Pixelfed to make a tweaked version of it with the https://Dribbble.com of 2012 in mind (without the "professional social networking & corpo portfolio):

> somewhere to share your art creations, designs (illustration, interfaces, animations, prints), finished or just prototypes/WIP.

That goal would be to make a place for artists, designers and not only photographers to have a place to make community, exchange on their works and search for inspiration on a place adapted to them.

That modifications would be to adjust the UI and maybe adjust some features to
1. Make it less photo centered
2. Dedicate a bigger place for research (maybe encourage posters to use hashtags and dedicate a better place for popular hashtags?)
2. Have a grid layout view as default feed instead of the Instagram/microbloging vertical one one medium and larger screens, to navigate more easily through creations

Other ideas are obviously welcome.

The advantage would be to not have to recreate *another* Fediverse thing from scratch, Pixelfed code should be able to handle all those "frontend changes".

# # # #

One good way to support the Fediverse's volunteer devs: ask them to work with volunteer design and user-research practitioners who help them to develop and test usable designs – before any substantial code is written.

Testing mockups and prototypes with the community would reduce unhappiness all around.

Hey folks,

@laura is looking for a new gig after three years at Stately. She’s a designer and front-end developer who writes, gives talks, makes videos, and has been doing a fair bit of dev/design advocacy recently.

Her approach is best summed up in her book, Accessibility for Everyone (https://abookapart.com/products/accessibility-for-everyone) and her talk on building tech that respects our rights https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=F5CvwioUy40

I don't get why so many artists still choose Mastodon. I realize the mobile options for Pixelfed are limited, but there really is no contest between the two Web interfaces.

Typographics ti: is the quarterly magazine of the Japan Typography Association. First published in 1980, the publication is still going on today.
Found a set of 10 magazines for 40 euros. I was curious but didn't find any PDF or sample online, so I've decided to give it a try. The content is really different from one another but what a discovery ! If I find a scanner solution, I will try to make them available for everybody.

目でみることばの世界
(The world of words seen with your eyes) is more a method for creating pictograms than an encyclopedia. Printed in 1983, the cover is a little bit old but the book inside is in a really good condition. 10 euros. The editor is the Japanese Standards Association. I wanted it because it was co-authored by Yukio Ota 太田幸夫.

290 pages of symbol systems and how to represent things. High quality colored print, with international standards but also Japanese symbolics like kimono belts, buddhas design, kamons, kabuki masks...

記号の事典 ( symbols encyclopedia) from 1985. One of the most expensive book, found it on yahoo auction for around 15 euros. The cardboard cover is a little bit damaged around the corner but the book inside is in MINT condition, it still smells fresh from the press. We have almost the same age and I'm not as fresh as this book. I will take care of it Japan, I promise.

Poster for the Warning Signs exhibition by Alan Lennon, which runs from the 8th to the 11th September 2023 at the Outline Gallery, 5 Lochrin Place, Edinburgh, EH3 9QX.<br /><br />From Alan - EXHIBITION NEWS<br />I’ve been working this year on a new challenging project called WARNING SIGNS which tests my skills as designer, painter and writer. This body of work is an artist’s attempt to say something of importance and create a thought-provoking snapshot of our turbulent times with a combination of cautionary verse and iconic imagery. It is my contribution to the genre of Protest Art, where the power of the image and words can hope to influence positive change.

Scott Kim's symmetrical alphabet, a beautiful mirror ambigram

# # # # # # #
The Latin alphabet, ingeniously stylized and arranged to be symmetrical across the vertical axis. The letters appear in the following rows: A–F, G–J, K–N, O, P–Q, R–T, U–W, X–Z. Though immediately recognizable as the Latin alphabet, it has a striking, almost otherworldly appearance. Its designer, Scott Kim, said that ambigrams can be explained in words but that "it's like describing a dance".

This is an "old" design, and seems to be the most liked on my TeePub shop 😮

I'm #, # , # , # and I wanted to share some of my art with you.
I've been drawing since before I could speak, and I'm 53 now! I have a vast amount of work to show, so I decided to just share my four latest pieces, along with my links.

Art is my main form of communication and is really my only way to get through to other people. Some people think because I use a cute vocabulary, my art is just funny -and that's ok, but I hope viewers can see that I'm trying to express something deeper than that.

One of my lifelong projects is # Series, which I started in 2009 and continue to this day, showing my takes on the records that made me who I am. Music is my main inspiration in life!

I've worked as a graphic designer my whole adult life, until the beginning of COVID, when I lost the job I thought I'd have til I "retired": layout designer for my local newspaper. Since then, I've been working in a grocery store, thinking it would be temporary til things "got back to normal"... but they never did, and I think, never will. So I am definitely interested in creative opportunities!

My Site: http://www.norncutson.com/
My Shop: https://www.redbubble.com/people/norncutson/shop

And here are my four most recent pieces. I am ALWAYS working on something, I've got sketches going, WIP going, and dreaming up (sometimes literally!) new ideas all the time!

Follow me for more!
I'm always posting sketches, WIPs and digging through old files!

Thanks for reading!

My take on the cover art of Shakespears Sister's GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD.<br /><br />A blue-tinted image. Two white women posing, one in profile, looking skyward, elegant; the other gazing directly at the viewer, creeping up in goblin mode.<br /><br />Text, top right corner, thin pale blue handwritten scrawl: "Shakespears<br />Sister<br />goodbye<br />cruel<br />world<br />x".
My take on the cover art of Alice Coltrane’s JOURNEY IN SATCHIDANANDA.<br /><br />On an orange gradient background, a cis black woman sits on bended knee, in a sage blue and metallic gold kurta. She looks deep in heavy thought. Her hair is in a tight afro, she wears a headband that matches her outfit. She wears wooden beads and a gold necklace. The tail of her robe is spread out before her.<br /><br />Text in center top, pale yellow sans serif: "ALICE COLTRANE". Below, n yellow sans serif: "JOURNEY IN SATCHIDANANDA. Below, in thin pale yellow sans serif: “Featuring".<br /><br />Below, in pale yellow sans serif; "PHAROAH SANDERS".
My take on Senorita Dido, of TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN.<br /><br />A black and white image of a pale, moon-faced Latin woman. She gazes directly at the viewer with large, calm, dark eyes. She has a beauty mark over her right lip.<br />She has a modest feather headdress, jeweled barrette, layers of necklaces, and a dress with a regal collar. The dress has sequined detailing over sheer fabric. We see her in head-and-shoulders-view against a black background.
My illustration of the band Lush!<br />The four band members, from left to right: Phil King, Emma Anderson, Mili Berenyi and Chris Acland.<br />Phil stands with hands on hips, looking serious, wearing a black outfit with white V-shaped stripes. Emma is holding her guitar and wearing long sleeve ivory and ivory stockings under a black jumper. A white headband holders her dark hair back, and her bands shield her eyes. Miki wirlds her guitar. Her flaming red hair stands out, as does her green t-shirt with red trim, polka dot sequined skirt, ripped black stockings and red shoes with gold buckles. Chis is wearing a comfy cozy ivory fisherman's sweater, as he pops out from behind Miki, smiling and laughing.<br />Behind them is a psychedelic swirl of colors, lights, patterns and textures.
