I am shaking a little as I prepare the cameras for my upcoming holiday. Film photography feels very far away, distant memories of long gone days when I wasn't ill. But here we are. It feels right to return to film, to a certain approach to photography in a place where I've only ever used film. There will be mountains, there will be sea, southern light and good company.

I'm excited. A little concerned I don't remember how to do this even as I know that I know exactly what to do.

A horizontal colour photograph of two film cameras on a table covered with a brown spotty wooden cloth. One camera is an SLR, the other a folder. Propped up by the side of the cameras are boxes with 35mm and 120 films.

When I started cleaning the corrosion, the metal strips that contact the AA cell disintegrated. The flash circuit still works though, so I'll see if I can bodge in a AAA cell holder instead.

In the meantime I loaded a new film and took some snaps of the garden.

Did some developing in the bathtub.

The original film had a couple of images on it. The shutter had been stuck open though.

New film worked well.

Not bad for something designed to be disposable.

I like geese; this is a greylag down at my local park. If I've got a film to finish, I go and pester them for a bit. They're such great characters.

A greylag goose stands in the middle of frame, looking off to camera left. I don't know what else to say about it other than geese are great, and I wish I could be friends with them.

In December 2021 I set myself a goal: Add a year-in-review feature to # before the next December. It's December 2024 and it's finally, slowly rolling out. It's not all that it was meant to be, because we couldn't prioritize it over all the other things we work on, but I didn't want to miss another year.

Years ago I was given an unexposed roll of Kodacolor II film that had expired in 1977. It had belonged to my grandfather, and had not been stored under ideal conditions.

So I threw it in the trash, like a normal person.

Kidding! I shot the roll in my Holga 120N in January 2011. The results were fairly wonky, and needed serious massaging in post. A few weren't bad for being shot on 34 years expired color film. # # #
An opened box of Kodacolor II film. The expiration date stamped on the side says December 1977. This roll was found among things that I was given after my grandfather died. The package has been opened but the film was unexposed.
Workers and construction equipment onsite for a new building. Day 26 of # is "rainy" and "shot abroad"

Well, it rains a *lot* here. Like, a *lot*. I definitely don't need to go abroad to find rain!

I have literally dozens of these to choose from but I'll limit myself to four because that's what fits in a post.

I really love the soft cool tones that Fuji film stocks get in this sort of weather - these are all Superia X-Tra 400, except the evergreen which is Venus 800 #
Close up colour photograph of some dried out beech leaves on a tree on a wet day in winter.<br /><br />The leaves are hanging heavily with raindrops, and they have an almost papery quality to them. They are a soft brownish orange colour, which contrasts with the cool grey tones of the blurred background.
Colour photograph of a tangle of bare winter branches with waterdrops on them.<br /><br />The branches are thin and dark in colour, and they are covered in hundreds of small waterdrops that appear as white points of light. Some of the branches closest to the camera are in sharp focus, falling away to a blur in the background. <br /><br />There is a slightly haziness to the image that comes from a misted up lens, and the colour tones are cool soft greens and greys.
Close up detail of part of an evergreen tree in winter.<br /><br />Only a small portion of the foliage is in sharp focus, towards the top right of the photograph - heavy round waterdrops catch the light and hang from the very tips of the leaves. The rest is a soft blur of deep cool emerald green, with occasional points of light where there are more waterdrops.
Colour photograph of some young spring leaves on a tree branch in the rain.<br /><br />The branch closest to the camera is in sharp focus, and it has tiny green leaves spread in clusters along its length, with the remains of little pink buds at the centre of each cluster. Many of the leaves hang heavy with waterdrops. More blurred branches can be made out in the background. There are a couple of streaks of falling rain visible in the photograph.<br /><br />The colour tones are cool soft spring greens, pinks and greys.

I have tons of new film to sort out (it will take a while!) but I just have to share this now because the colours in these just blew me away! I think I'm in love.

They look like movie stills for a reason!

This was my first go at using rerolled cinema film with the proper cinema film processing and it has blown my mind 🤯

Colour close up photograph of a single dried out flower head on an umbellifer plant in winter.<br /><br />There is a single stem in the centre, with around eight smaller stems radiating out in a circular pattern from the top, like an upturned umbrella. Each of the small stems has a few little pieces of even smaller stem at the end, although these are tiny and often mostly missing.<br /><br />Only a few of the stems closest to the camera are in sharp focus, and the rest falls away rapidly to a rich blur behind.<br /><br />The plant material has soft brown and beige colour tones, and the background is mostly cool blues. The colours have a very cinematic feel to them.
Colour photograph of some dried out plant stems, backlit by the low winter sun.<br /><br />The frame is mostly blurred, with lots of thin tall plant stems just about visible in the background. One single stem about a third of the way into the frame is in sharp focus - it is a single stem reaching directly upwards, with little nobbly bumps spaced out in pairs up the top half of the stem.<br /><br />There is a brighter spot towards the top of the frame where the sun is nearby, and a few faint round discs of lens blur.<br /><br />The colour tones are soft, cool desaturated browns - the whole thing has a gentle cinematic feel to it.
Close up photograph of a gorse bush with yellow flowers in late winter.<br /><br />A single stem of gorse is in sharp focus towards the right hand side of the frame - it has long fierce looking green thorny leaves, and a number of golden yellow half open flower buds along it's length. One particular bud towards the top is clearly lit but the sun and you can almost see it opening.<br /><br />The background is a blur of soft greens and yellows from the rest of the gorse bush, and there are some more blurred yellow flowers in the foreground at the bottom right corner of the frame.<br /><br />The colour tones are soft cool greens and gentle golden yellows.
Close up photograph of some grass in a lawn in late winter / early spring.<br /><br />Some blades of grass close to the camera are in sharp focus, fading away to a green blur behind. The lawn is lit by the low winter sunshine, and every so often there are little points of light where a blade of grass catches it just right.<br /><br />The colour tones are cool and gentle but also somehow warm - the whole photograph has a cinematic feel to it.

Film photography is magic!

Just developed my first film rolls at home, in the kitchen sink, with caffenol.

They're still drying, so I haven't scanned them in yet, but there are definitely images on there.

Amazing! 📷 🎞️ ☕

Hey newish # on the fediverse.

Are you uploading some of your favorite photos you've recently shot? Are you looking forward to posting in a place that isn't dictated by a corporate algorithm? Which means ppl will see your posts!!??

Are you wondering why you're not getting a lot of reboosts and engagement??

If you're not putting in alt text/image descriptions that could be why. Try it and see how many boosts you start to get. :)

Question for # developing.

I have a 'found roll' of exposed AGFA IF (17DIN/40ASA) 36 exposure 35mm film I'd like to see whats on. Other than a 1+100 Rodinal stand developing is there a recipe for this film? I can't find anything online.

The doors of an old stone church. The doors have done kind of 3D panelling going on, and are set in an ornate stone archway.

I started making prints! It’s a very fun process and there is something mildly intoxicating about the “well, this is the image I have” nature of the process. Once that print goes into fixer, it is what it is!

I love taking pictures around Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and I’m always drawn to the Office of the Prime Minister and Privy Council Office across the road. The big sandstone building stands out and at sunset the light catches the windows and makes for some great pics.

This is a picture of a 8x10 photo print, on a roughly 20 degree angle so there is a space between the edge of the print in the upper left corner and lower right corner of the image. The print is black and white and vaguely sepia in tone. A large sandstone building made in the second empire architectural style takes up most of the page except for the sky above it which has no clouds or features. The windows are reflecting light and make them look mirror like in the print.

This is perhaps too much of a niche thing to ask, but are there any camera tinkerers (hobby or professional) who’d be happy to share a pic of their camera tinkering tools, toolrolls, chests, tupperwares of bits etc? I’m trying to get a feel for what tools folks use, how they store them. It’s for a design I’m starting which might end up on a tee, or print, or in my bottomless ‘to-finish’ folder 😅

Hi mastodon.art!

I'm a train nerd.

Train nerds love taking pictures, even if it's just pointing a digital camera in auto mode vaguely in the direction of the tracks. That was me for years.

Anyway, in 2020 I got myself a Zenit 122 analog camera on a whim, and learning to use that has improved my skills a lot and really shifted my focus from *train* photography to train *photography*.

Looking forward to being part of the # community here!
