Frazer Price Watercolour Box Quick Review.
It’s nice, well thought out, comes packaged in a nice box (but who cares about the box?) but is flimsy.
It actually took a very small fall and is badly dented, very noticeable even on the inside.
The water container has two little mixing areas and allows for a twin water pot to sit over the lid.
The three foldout mixing areas are nicely made and clean up reasonably well.
The design is such that you would hold it totally differently depending which hand you hold it with. I would like it less if I were left handed.
It holds 18 half pans and is very useable. It’s fairly light and does have everything you need for truly portable watercolour painting or urban sketching.
Now the bad news. It’s not exactly cheap and I doubt it will last long. The hinges don’t feel great, but I may be wrong. The plastic for the pans is terrible and thin - not the end of the world if it breaks because there’s other simple ways to attach the pans.
The bit that is least likely to survive is the water pots. The plastic is too flimsy. It’s also a little too small. An extra few millimetres in length to the box would have made a big difference, and allowed 3 more half pans to fit.
I bought mine on a recommendation from a well known watercolour artist, and liked the size and ability to have 18 colours, I still do. But I find it hard to say it is good value because of the flimsiness. YMMV.
